Ivan Shishkin. “Morning in the Pine Forest”

"Morning in the pine forest" is one of the best and most famous works of the artist. A painting by Russian painters Ivan Shishkin and Konstantin Savitsky, painted in 1889. The technique of the work is oil painting on canvas.

Presumably, the idea of the painting was suggested to Shishkin by Savitsky, who later became a co-author and depicted figures of cubs (according to Shishkin's sketches). These bears, with some differences in poses and numbers (at first there were two of them), appear in preparatory drawings and sketches.

In the foreground and in the center there are 4 bears, two of which are on a tree, and the rest are standing next to each other. In the background there is a beautiful large pine forest illuminated by the sun. Green and brown tones prevail.

One of the most beloved paintings by Ivan Shishkin is "Morning in the Pine Forest". The skill of the landscape painter, the singer of the Russian forest, as his contemporaries often called him, manifested itself in this work in full force. The artist seems to invite him to enter the untouched forest thicket with him. The pine wilds live by their own laws. Huge trees grow and die, obeying only natural cycles. Once upon a time, a storm uprooted a mighty pine tree from the ground. A family of bears feels at ease on its broken trunk. No one bothers their simple animal game. This group is in the foreground, first of all, and attracts attention. Anyone who stops by the painting is interested in considering the owners of the forest, and it seems that they are the main content of the canvas.

At the bottom, on the left side of the canvas, there is a signature – I. Shishkin 1889, and below it another one is visible – K. Savitsky, but it is covered with a brushstroke and is not immediately visible. Two signatures of artist friends contain some kind of secret. In a letter to his family in March 1889, Savitsky reported that in Shishkin's painting "Morning in the Pine Forest" presented at the 17th exhibition of the Association of Traveling Art Exhibitions, he, Savitsky, was "not completely absent", since he wrote a family of bears in it, and Shishkin – a forest landscape. Tretyakov bought a painting from the exhibition, paying for it a large sum for a landscape work – 4 thousand rubles, the fourth part of which Savitsky received. The artist jokingly said that he and Shishkin "killed the bears and shared the skin! And I'm a participant in the 4th share." In all exhibition catalogues and Pavel Tretyakov's, the painting was always listed with the authorship of only Shishkin, therefore, perhaps Savitsky himself covered his signature with a brushstroke.

Although the animals occupy a central position on the canvas, the true hero of the work is the landscape, the virgin forest. The tops of the pines are colored by the first rays of the sun, but in the deep valley there is still a cold lilac fog, in which the crowding trunks of trees are gently drawn.

The widespread popularity of the painting has reduced the seriousness of its perception among the general audience. Behind the superficially perceived entertaining nature of the plot, her critics did not see the sincere, without the slightest hint of sentimentality, the artist's interest in the mighty force of nature, with which he captivates the viewer. Shishkin's pictorial method is based on drawing – attentive, loving, accurate. With his tongue, he conveys his admiration for the power of branching pines, the beauty of the pattern of intertwined dry branches against the background of morning fog. The special appeal of Shishkin's canvases lies in the variety of textured techniques. With brushes of different sizes and their different loads of colorful dough, the artist reproduces white flower heads, brittle grasses, mosses covering the ground.

The combination of a strictly verified composition with an impeccable coloristic solution and convincing expressiveness of painting makes the painting one of Shishkin's most successful works.

Russian writer and publicist V. M. Mikheev wrote in 1894 the following:

"Look into this gray haze of the forest distance, into the "Bear family in the forest.".. and you will understand what a connoisseur of the forest, what a strong objective artist you are dealing with. And if something in his paintings violates the integrity of your impression, it is not the details of the forest, but, for example, the figures of bears, the interpretation of which causes a strong desire and spoils the overall picture where the artist placed them. Obviously, the chief forestry specialist is not that good at depicting animals."

When I look at the painting, I feel peaceful, because I love the forest and associate it with tranquility. And the little cubs look cute. I love landscapes.
